En la localidad de suba en el barrio Bilbao, vive Erick Santiago Amado, un joven de 13 años, acompañado de su tía y su madre María del Pilar Barahona; él desarrolla sus estudios en el colegio República de Bolivia, ubicado en la localidad de Engativá, allí cursa grado sexto de bachillerato. Fue diagnosticado con Síndrome de Down moderado desde antes de nacer, pero a pesar de su discapacidad, se caracteriza por ser un chico alegre, amistoso y muy socializador, así lo describe su madre.

A veces tiene recaídas con respecto a su comportamiento, se estresa mucho y no quiere permanecer en el aula de clases, en donde asiste de lunes a viernes; puesto que para nadie es un secreto que los planteles educativos convencionales no manejan un sistema estratégico para la inclusión de los niños y jóvenes con algún tipo de discapacidad. Es por ello que después de un voz a voz de una compañera de trabajo de María del Pilar que asistía a FUNDEI, ella decidió asistir a la fundación y ahora en sus casi tres años de permanencia afirman que todo ha cambiado para los dos, ya que el proceso que se maneja, no es solo para el beneficiario, sino también para las familias.

Sus tres grandes pasiones en la fundación son: danzas, allí desarrolla su talento acompañado de ritmos clásicos como el folclor colombiano hasta ritmos urbanos cotidianos. Deportes, en donde el futbol, desarrolla para Erick valores importantes como el respeto, trabajo en equipo, disciplina y compañerismo. Y por último música, en donde su género favorito es el popular, gracias a su madre que desde muy pequeño lo ponía a escuchar a artistas como Jhon Alex Castaño, Jessi Uribe, Vicente Fernández entre otros. Erick empezaba a imitarlos con diferentes elementos tales como palos de escoba, de recogedores o todo lo que se pareciera a un micrófono.

Su madre al ver que a Erick le apasionaba cantar le compro un traje de mariachi y el cd del mexicano Vicente Fernández, para que ensayará. Un día la secretaría de integración familiar organizó un concurso titulado “yo me llamo”, en donde Erick se presentó en la biblioteca de Suba, Francisco José de Caldas, y quedando en segundo puesto, le dedico su triunfo a su madre y apoyo incondicional.

Un recuerdo que también tiene muy presente María del Pilar de su hijo, fue el día que la sorprendió en la feria de emprendimiento que se realizó en el parque fontanar de la misma localidad, allí canto varias canciones de Vicente Fernández, como lo había ensayado. Los sentimientos por todos los asistentes fueron los que hablaron por si solos. María del Pilar en la actualidad, asiste a los talleres que presta la fundación, en donde pone en práctica las enseñanzas en casa con su hijo. Por parte de Erick, sus logros han sido aprender a manejar su carácter, acatar órdenes, que su comprensión sea más rápida, que la timidez no sea un factor frente a las nuevas personas que rodean su entorno, sigue asistiendo a terapias de lenguaje y también cuida su voz, ya que uno de sus mayores sueños es convertirse en uno de los mejores cantantes de música popular.
