“Mateo es un niño colaborador, cariñoso, voluntarioso, receptivo y muy atento”. Así describe Mónica Hernández a su hijo. Desde que nació, su vida no ha sido sencilla, sin embargo, cada día enseña, no solo a sus padres sino a muchas personas el valor de la vida, el significado de la familia y lo más importante, que puedes ser feliz con lo que tienes.

A los cinco meses de embarazo de su primer hijo, con algo de nervios y expectativas de ser padres, Daniel Aponte y Mónica Hernández asisten a uno de los controles prenatales y la primer ecografía del pequeño. Después de la larga espera, pasan una gran puerta, entran al consultorio donde encuentran un hombre cuyo cabello era tan blanco como la nieve, y en su cara las líneas que cruzaban de un lado a otro mostraban las experiencias que había vivido al interior del hospital. Pide a Mónica que se acueste en la camilla y procede a hacer su labor.

Después de unos segundos, con la barriguita descubierta, el doctor empieza a mirar al bebé, unos minutos después da la noticia que es un varón, en medio de la felicidad Mónica percibe algo raro en la expresión del doctor, que mientras sigue moviendo el transductor de un lado a otro sin escrúpulos dice “su hijo tiene Síndrome de Down”. Sin saber qué decir, Mónica y Daniel terminan el control y salen del lugar.

Después de algunas dificultades y con dos años de edad, Mateo junto a sus padres da el primero, el segundo y el tercer paso; con una emoción incomparable todos celebran los primeros pasos del pequeño; primeros y cortos pasos que luego de algunos años se convertirían en grandes. Con ternura en su voz, Mónica cuenta la primera vez que Mateo bailó en público, aunque a decir verdad, sus padres estaban más nerviosos que él mismo; después de semanas de práctica con su profesora, un escenario y muchas personas mirando las presentaciones, llega el turno del grupo de Mateo, y cual bailarín  profesional dio su mejor función, que en medio de aplausos y gritos de felicidades terminó su excelente presentación.

Allí mismo, en el jardín Mónica conoce a Yenny Umaña, y luego de un tiempo, charlas de capacitaciones con profesionales en el tema de discapacidad y compartir con amigos, surge la idea de crear un lugar donde se pudiera dar un apoyo extra a las personas en condición de discapacidad y sus familias. Con la experiencia que ya tenían con Mateo empiezan a buscar más información y crean la Fundación de Desarrollo y Emprendimiento Integral FUNDEI.

Cuando Mateo tenía cinco años nació su hermano Gabriel. La llegada de un nuevo integrante a la familia trajo mucha felicidad y en ese momento Mateo encontró a su mejor amigo para toda la vida; desde siempre han jugado juntos, además explotan su creatividad creando nuevos mundos donde ellos son los únicos héroes. La protección de hermano mayor es algo que destaca a Mateo, sin embargo, en ocasiones Gabriel actúa como el más grande.

Gracias a la historia de Mateo, algunos compañeros de la Corporación Síndrome de Down conocen FUNDEI. La fundación con el paso del tiempo tomó más fuerza, pues empezaron solo diez personas, que después fueron quince, veinte, y ahora hay múltiples disciplinas que aportan conocimientos como voluntarios, incluso practicantes de diferentes universidades.

Desde siempre Daniel y Mónica han tenido apoyo incondicional de sus familias, tanto así, que después de dos años de formada FUNDEI,  algunos primos de Mónica ingresan a hacer parte del equipo de voluntariado de la fundación. El primero fue Mauricio, quien inició apadrinando a Mateo, después Jaime y posteriormente Felipe, quienes ahora trabajan en equipo con los demás profesionales.

“En FUNDEI todos somos una familia, una gran familia” así describe las relaciones dentro de la fundación Daniel Aponte, el padre de Mateo; quien cada sábado con ayuda de algunos voluntarios verifica la estabilidad de todos, tanto beneficiarios, voluntarios y practicantes.

Luego de un tiempo, y Mateo ya con diez años nace una nueva integrante de su núcleo familiar, Salomé, una niña muy activa, inteligente y atenta. Con felicidad y emoción Mateo y Gabriel reciben a la niña de la casa; ahora, no solo es un mundo de súper héroes, sino de caballeros y la princesa que protegen como a nadie. Mateo comparte mucho tiempo con sus hermanos, que apoyan  las múltiples actividades que se realizan en la casa para potencializar el aprendizaje de Mateo.

Cocinar, dibujar, crear juegos y otras actividades en familia hacen de Mateo un niño feliz. Daniel y Mónica buscan a diario nuevas estrategias divertidas para que su hijo aprenda a ser una persona independiente.

Mateo hoy en día es un niño autónomo, que con ayuda de sus padres logra reforzar y crear nuevos conocimientos para su vida. En FUNDEI asiste y disfruta de las clases con sus compañeros y profesores, quienes también aportan a la vida de los niños y cuidadores, que día a día luchan por el  bienestar y felicidad de sus hijos.
